Are you a recent graduate looking for a stepping stone into fisheries science?
The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for a recent graduate to join its Fisheries Management directorate as a Science Officer. This 1 year fixed term position would suit an energetic individual looking for work experience before continuing their studies for a higher degree or as an entry into fisheries management.
The role of the directorate is to ensure the sustainability of New Zealand's fisheries resources while providing for their utilisation. The Fisheries Management science team supports fisheries management and strategy by providing scientific advice on the sustainability of fisheries and on assessing and mitigating environmental effects of fishing.
The Science Officer is responsible for providing timely technical and administrative support to the science team and is expected to work independently and to carry duties through to their completion with a minimum of supervision.
If you have an appropriate tertiary qualification (relevant Bachelors with experience, or relevant Masters), an eye for detail, excellent analytical skills (including maths or statistics papers to at least second year level), a demonstrated ability to produce written material that is fluent and clear, as well as good communication skills to interact with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, we want to hear from you.
As you will be responsible for updating and maintaining science group databases and document tracking systems you will need to be familiar with spreadsheets and simple databases. From time to time we have training opportunities or special projects where there is opportunity for you to stretch your abilities and further develop your expertise.
