  • Do you have technical expertise around food processing?
  • Are your stakeholder engagement skills top notch?
  • Would joining a high performing and close knit team appeal to you?
  • Check out this exciting opportunity for a Specialist Adviser / Senior Adviser in the Animal Products team at the Ministry for Primary Industries!

Are you a team player looking for an exciting new opportunity within an experienced team that is at the forefront of “Growing and Protecting New Zealand”?

The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for a vibrant high performer to join its Animal Products team.  This team sets the requirements for the production and processing of animal-based products (usually for food).  It also develops guidance materials and other tools to help businesses meet the requirements and produce safe and suitable products.

The position is based in Wellington in the Animal & Animal Products Directorate within MPI’s Regulation & Assurance branch.  This branch contains MPI’s core regulatory functions.  It provides the requisite confidence, transparency and trust to domestic and overseas consumers, overseas regulators and the primary industries as to the credibility, integrity and strength of our regulatory settings and systems for biosecurity, food safety and primary production (including animal welfare and fisheries management). We can offer variety, and unique opportunities to develop your skills within a large and dynamic organisation.

We have one role available.  Our successful candidate will be appointed as either a Specialist Adviser or a Senior Adviser depending on their qualifications, knowledge and experience.  A Specialist Adviser would be expected to hit the ground running and have the knowledge-base to be able to look after a sector or specialty area with minimal oversight.  A Senior Adviser would be expected to have the fundamental knowledge necessary to work in the food safety space, but may not have the experience necessary to “go it alone”.  This person would be mentored by their manager and the rest of the team to develop that experience over time – so this would be a great developmental opportunity!

A Specialist Adviser Animal Products is responsible for the development, evaluation and review of standards, programmes and implementation tools which are used to control production and processing of animal products so that those products are safe and suitable for their intended use.  This work is technically challenging and requires liaison and coordination with a number of different internal and external stakeholders to ensure that standards are science-based, practical, achievable and effective.  Specialist Advisers would be expected to work with other MPI personnel and to provide expert advice within MPI and to external stakeholders. Specialist Advisers may also be expected to represent New Zealand in international fora.

A Senior Adviser Animal Products contributes to the development, evaluation and review of standards, programmes and implementation tools which are used to control production and processing of animal products so that those products are safe and suitable for their intended use.  This work is technically challenging and requires liaison and coordination with a number of different internal and external stakeholders to ensure that standards are science-based, practical, achievable and effective.  Senior Advisers would be expected to work with other MPI personnel and to provide expert advice within MPI and to external stakeholders. Senior Advisers would be expected to provide support to other members of the team.

To be successful in either role you should have:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. food technology, microbiology, veterinary)
  • good relationship management skills
  • flexibility in your approach to new challenges and ideas
  • sound interpersonal skills
  • sound communication skills, both oral and written
  • appropriate knowledge of New Zealand’s primary production and processing of animals, or food processing
  • knowledge of food safety and an understanding of food processing
  • knowledge of current trends in the national and international food regulatory environment
  • familiarity with New Zealand’s regulatory systems and legislation associated with primary production and processing or food
  • experience in the development of implementation tools (such as guidance documents and templates) to help implement those standards

To be successful as a Specialist Adviser you should also have

  • experience in the identification and consideration of risk management options
  • experience in the development and implementation of regulatory requirements

If this sounds like you and you have the motivation and desire to be successful within a strong team of professionals, then we want to hear from you!!
