MPI has a permanent opportunity for a Fisheries Observer Officer to assist with planning and co-ordinating the deployment of observers onto fishing vessels within New Zealand's exclusion economic zone.
You're excellent planning, negotiating, writing and verbal communication skills will be in demand, as you interact with internal and external stakeholders including observers, scientists, and industry as well as other government departments.
Your people management skills will be essential as you brief and debrief observers, ensure the safety of fisheries observer staff when at sea, monitor observer performance, and participate in the recruitment and training of observer staff. You will need to have a good eye for detail when reviewing data and trip reports, a proven ability to multitask, and adapt quickly to a fluid working environment.
To be successful in this role you will ideally have a relevant tertiary qualification or broad relevant technical or operational experience in a service delivery environment, knowledge and passion for fisheries, science and environmental issues. Business administration, contractor management, recruitment and training experience will be beneficial.
