We have an exciting new opportunity in the Science and Risk Assessment Directorate for a permanent Senior Adviser, Operational Research.
This position will provide expert scientific advice on programmes that contribute to MPI's role in biosecurity and food safety protection, promoting economic growth and ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources. A key component of the role is providing technical input to all aspects of the Biosecurity, Food Safety and Animal Welfare operational research programmes. These programmes provide essential input to MPIs regulatory systems.
This Role will provide you with the opportunity to provide expert input to the design of research projects and lead the negotiation and management of science programmes. As part of science prioritisation, design and delivery, you will maintain a proactive and dynamic interface with relevant business groups within MPI as well as external stakeholders.
You will need to bring an innovative but systematic approach to our operational research programmes and the external partnerships we need to put in place to deliver outcomes that are of high utility and are delivered on time.
We are looking for an individual with expert biologically-based scientific skills that are transferable across biosecurity and food safety disciplines. The Role requires someone with good analytical skills that can communicate key science messages to a variety of audiences. The Role also requires someone who can co-ordinate and manage multiple projects and ensure contracted work delivers implementable outcomes for MPI.
Bring your degree in agriculture, food or other relevant biological science, as well as experience in biosecurity, food safety or laboratory diagnostics to our fast moving busy environment where no two days are the same.
You will have a passion for high science standards, strategic thinking and providing leading-edge advice. We envisage candidates will have:
- Previous experience managing research outputs
- Excellent track record in the design and development of science based projects that produce robust and validated outcomes

- Ability to interrogate and understand scientific data and communicate limitations
- Strong understanding of the process involved in the validation of scientific outcomes suitable for Government requirements
- Capacity to quickly identify and clearly express core elements of an issue
