Are you an innovative scientist looking for a role that can really make a difference to New Zealand's economy, environment and way of life?
The global biosecurity threats from pests and diseases are growing in complexity and scale. At the same time the volumes of cargo and mail, and the numbers of passengers and vessels arriving in New Zealand are also increasing. In response to this, the Ministry for Primary Industries is in the process of establishing a Biosecurity Intelligence Team to enhance our ability to predict and forecast biosecurity threats.
The Biosecurity Intelligence Team will comprise scientific experts, geospatial analysts and experienced data modellers. All team members will be trained in intelligence practice and techniques, before being tasked as a team to work out how to apply those techniques in the biosecurity space.
Biosecurity intelligence is an emerging discipline that integrates science with the analysis of the human behaviours (economic, political, and environmental) that impact the spread of pests and diseases. By establishing a Biosecurity Intelligence Team the Ministry for Primary Industries aims to enhance our ability to target biosecurity risk at the border and ensure that we continue to protect New Zealand from unwanted pests and diseases in a rapidly changing world.
About the Role
We are looking for adaptable scientists who have an understanding of pests and diseases in the animal, aquatic or plant sectors. Successful applicants may be: epidemiologists, marine biologists, botanists, ecologists, forestry scientists, or microbiologists, but this list is not exhaustive. The skillset we are looking for are those people who possess analytical prowess coupled with a willingness to innovate, a strong team player ethic, and an enjoyment of engaging with colleagues, customers and stakeholders.
Reporting to one of two Team Leaders Indicators & Warnings you'll lead and deliver timely intelligence products that identify risks and opportunities for New Zealand's primary industries. To enable you to do this, you will have access to “big data” collection, analysis and visualisation tools. Your work will provide you with the opportunity to influence key decisions in the biosecurity space.
This role is suitable for post-doctoral scientists who are comfortable in an ambiguous environment.
Security clearance to the level of SECRET to TOP SECRET or TSS is required for this position dependent on the role. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain this clearance. More information about security clearances can be found here
