The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!
About our team
The Environment and Communities directorate leads works to develop and implement policy and regulatory frameworks in New Zealand to improve the economic and environmental performance of the Primary Sectors.
About the roles
The teams within our Environment and Communities policy directorate work closely together and there are strong linkages and synergies between our work programmes. However the key focuses of the two teams are:
Domestic Climate Change
Our team works on high profile climate change policy (agriculture and forestry). We lead work to address agricultural emissions, enable climate change to fund an expansion of our native and exotic forests (and the carbon dioxide they absorb), and run the Climate Change Forestry and Biological Emissions Reference Groups. Knowledge of the primary sector and the context it operates in would be useful for these positions. A background or understanding of environmental economics will be highly regarded.
We have a wide ranging programme including sustainable land-use policy, national direction under the Resource Management Act for high class soils, and a review of the Walking Access Act. Experience in agricultural policy and the Resource Management Act would be useful for these roles.
How / why to apply?
Our work stretches all the way from the Beehive to the border. If you want a career where you help to grow and protect New Zealand in a very real way then this is it. Our team is collegial, supportive and hard working. MPI has a focus on career pathways so this is the first step in your career with us and we will help you grow.
