The Ministry for Primary Industries' Plant Health and Environment Laboratory in Auckland is looking for a dynamic Senior Technician to join the Mycology & Bacteriology team for a 12-month fixed-term period. You will provide laboratory maintenance; diagnostic processing for fungi and bacteria in plants collected during surveillance and investigation activities, or intercepted at the border / post entry quarantine; routine diagnoses; contribute to diagnostic capability development; and data management. All work in the laboratory is done under the international quality management standard ISO 17025.
Our Mycology & Bacteriology team is dedicated, diverse and highly supportive that operates in a busy and varied environment to deliver our core work programme supporting New Zealand's biosecurity system and our stakeholders.

About the Branch and the Team
The Plant Health & Environment Laboratory (PHEL) is part of MPI's Diagnostic and Surveillance Services Directorate of the Operations Branch. PHEL is the national reference centre for the identification of all suspected exotic, new and emerging pests and diseases of plants, and arthropod pests affecting the environment. PHEL also provide diagnostic services to primary industries to facilitate trade.
We have specialised facilities including containment laboratories, a Level 3 quarantine glasshouse and tissue culture facility, equipment for molecular and serological procedures, microscopy stations (including a transition electron microscope and remote microscopy set-up), and reference collections of pests.
Key Skills / Educational Requirements
Bring your tertiary degree along with your enjoyment of working in a fast moving, busy environment.
- Practical experience of working within a plant pathology laboratory;
- Proven skills in molecular techniques such as nucleic acid extraction methods and PCR; and
- Recognition and working knowledge of common plant diseases is desired.
