The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!
About our team
MPI represents New Zealand in a number of international fisheries management issues. We work closely with international and New Zealand government organisations (especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) on international fisheries and trade issues. We aim to maximise economic and other benefits to New Zealand from international fisheries, while protecting the environment and meeting international obligations. Our team leads engagement in many international fisheries issues, regulates New Zealand fishing vessels on the high seas and provides specialist policy advice and guidance to other agencies.
About the role
We are seeking to recruit a Senior Policy Analyst. The successful applicant will lead MPI's engagement in the Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and in the Southern Ocean. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in developing international rules that has an objective of conserving Antarctic marine life.
You will be leading the CCAMLR work programme and working across MPI teams to implement New Zealand's international obligations. Understanding the fisheries policy, fisheries management and fisheries science interface is key to the role. You will also be working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the Department of Conservation (DOC), Ministry of Defence, New Zealand Defence and other agencies. A typical day in this role will be leading engagement, dealing with policy issues, drafting briefings, engaging with other Ministries, and liaising with external stakeholders.
Fisheries experience is not essential and we are seeking a range of experience and skills sets. However, experience in dealing with management of natural resources, or an interest in science is desirable. We are looking for a good team player who will be able to forge strong working relationships across the public sector and beyond. Exceptional communication skills and experience in briefing Ministers would be an advantage.
It is high profile, fast paced and exciting work. If you are up for the challenge, we want to hear from you.
