- A new exciting opportunity to establish a team and processes
- Do you want to make a real difference in growing and protecting our economy and the Kiwi way of life?
We have an exciting new leadership opportunity as Manager Pathway Assessment. This is a new role with new accountabilities that will allow the individual the freedom to set up new systems and approaches to support a high level of achievement by the team.
If you have a good understanding of biosecurity and auditing, and enjoy leading people and engaging with a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders, this could be the position for you.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. We help maximise export opportunities for our primary industries, improve sector productivity, ensure the food we produce is safe, increase sustainable resource use, and protect New Zealand from biological risk. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!
About the role
The position reports to the Director of Plants and Pathways. The directorate is focused on managing the offshore biosecurity risk from plants and plant products. The purpose of the Manager Pathway Assessment position is to lead a team of technical specialists who conduct off-shore assessment and audits of trading partner exporting systems.
The Manager ensures offshore assessments influence and support the development and review of import health standards. The team connects with intelligence officers and border staff to monitor compliance performance on plant import pathways, and provides analysis to support evidence based prioritisation of pathways reviews.
Establishing a cost recovery regime for the function will be a first priority and for the next 12 – 18 months the role will contribute to developing and implementing major systems and process changes across the pre-border area of the biosecurity system
In this role you will use your background in plant related sciences and your experience in managing people operating in a regulatory environment. In doing so you will:
- Manage a team of technical experts to achieve excellent risk management outcomes
- Lead change projects to deliver meaningful improvements
- Manage timely delivery of a challenging work programme
- Actively engage with stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver results
MPI offers plenty of opportunity to grow professionally, technically and/or managerially, develop expertise in your field of interest, all while being supported by dedicated managers and colleagues who are keen to share their knowledge and experience.
This role is based in Wellington and some domestic and international travel may be required.
