- Do you get satisfaction from getting the best out of people and driving delivery?
- Do you enjoy critical thinking and innovation in a complex technical environment?
- Do you want to make a real difference in growing and protecting our economy and the Kiwi way of life?
We are looking for two exceptional managers to lead teams of technical people dedicated to developing New Zealand's risk-based standards for the import of ornamental plants and plant products.
If you have a good understanding of science, are passionate about biosecurity, enjoy leading people and engaging with a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders, then one of these positions could be for you.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. We help maximise export opportunities for our primary industries, improve sector productivity, ensure the food we produce is safe, increase sustainable resource use, and protect New Zealand from biological risk. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!
These positions sit in the Plant & Pathways Directorate within the Regulation & Assurance Branch which supports primary producers and consumers by implementing the full range of MPI's legislative and regulatory frameworks.
About the team
The positions report to the Director of Plants and Pathways and you will join our strong management team as Manager Plant Product Imports or Manager Ornamental Imports.
The Plants and Pathways Directorate is focused on ensuring the biosecurity risk from importing plants and plant products is managed offshore. The Directorate sets strong and technically justified import requirements for plant imports and manages hitchhiker pests like brown marmorated stink bug and biofouling associated with craft.
About the roles
The purpose of the Manager Ornamental Imports position is to lead a team of technical specialists who develop, implement and review import health standards for the importation of ornamental plants, cut flowers and foliage products. The team evaluates emerging risks and amends IHSs to ensure risk is effectively managed. The team leads the resolution of consignment level phytosanitary issues where advice or decisions are needed by biosecurity officers at New Zealand's border.
The purpose of the Manager Plant Product Imports position is to lead a team of technical specialists who develop, implement and review import health standards and other biosecurity standards for the importation of plant products. The position establishes and reviews standards for transitional and other facilities associated with imports in the biosecurity system to ensure risk is effectively managed. The team also works closely with biosecurity officers at the border to provide advice and assist in resolving consignment level issues.
In these roles you will use your background in plant related sciences and your experience in managing people operating in a regulatory environment. In doing so you will:
- Manage a team of technical experts to achieve excellent risk management outcomes
- Lead change projects to deliver meaningful improvements
- Manage timely delivery of a challenging work programme
- Actively engage with stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver results
MPI offers plenty of opportunity to grow professionally, technically and/or managerially, develop expertise in your field of interest, all while being supported by dedicated managers and colleagues who are keen to share their knowledge and experience.
