About our Team
The Government Health and Safety Lead (GHSL) provides practical support to chief executives and senior leaders of government agencies to enable their personal leadership of health and safety for the benefit of all New Zealanders. We work with 37 public service and other government agencies to support sharing of proactive and joined up resources, strengthen system capability and build cross-system relationships.
We've just finalised our four year strategic plan and are keen to develop and are growing our small team to help implement our work programme.
About the Role
The Senior Adviser is responsible for leading or supporting Government Health and Safety Lead initiatives and projects.
You'll spend a lot of time building relationships across all 37 agencies and working with agency staff, industry stakeholders and experts to progress work and/or develop resources.
This role has a lot of variety. You'll work with agencies to tackle common critical risks such as mental health and driving, whilst also supporting sector collaboration and sharing of practice and knowledge by organising and facilitating practitioner forums and events.
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have a solid foundation of good Health and Safety practice, complemented by practical experience as a Health and Safety Adviser, ideally within the public sector or other large or high risk organisation(s). You will need to be efficient at building relationships with key stakeholders and working closely with people across different areas.
To succeed in this position, you will need to demonstrate:
- Relevant Health & Safety qualifications, experience and professional membership
- Experience collaborating to deliver initiatives that improve Health and Safety outcomes
- Strong relationship building, communication and management skills
- Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
