Strategic Treaty Policy and Capability – Principal Analyst and Senior Analyst role
Senior Policy Analyst: $78,817 to $124,570
Principal Adviser: $109,626 to $148,318
Appointments depend on skills, capabilities, and experience

Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team
The Policy and trade branch delivers sector level strategic thinking, policy advice and analysis, to maximise export opportunities. We pride ourselves in ensuring that all advice provided is well rounded and that we meet our obligations to our treaty partners, by ensuring that the treaty principles are at the heart of our policy.
The policy and trade branch prioritises treaty policy and we are looking for individuals with experience in this and also experience in building treaty capability. This function is key to the success of our work programme and our engagement with our treaty partners. The range of subjects is vast from international trade to climate change, from aquaculture to forestry, from food safety to biosecurity.
The Strategic Treaty Policy and Capability team has been created to lead large strategic initiatives across the Policy and Trade Branch, and the organisation.
The team provides Branch-wide intellectual leadership in responding to Māori primary sector policy issues and leads strategic direction in implementing the Māori primary sector strategy as we align with Māori economic development initiatives. The team will also lead and support Treaty policy to elevate the Māori Primary Sector.
Mōu│About You
Critical to your success is your ability to build collaborative relationships and establish credibility with Māori, sector stakeholders, and partners across Policy and Trade, MPI, other New Zealand Government agencies and service providers. You will navigate critical problems, balance viewpoints and enable dialogue to forge a pathway forward.
You will enjoy variety in your work and be able to deal with a fast-paced environment.
Our ideal candidate will bring:
- Strong understanding of management policies relating to the Treaty Principles and the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi.
- Good understanding of Te Ao Maori from employment experience or study.
- Previous experience working in partnership with Māori and/or strategic leadership.
- Proven ability to work with stakeholders with diverse skill sets and information requirements, and to build credible and effective relationships.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
