Salary band for this position is $64,331 - $85,624

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About our directorate
The Primary Sector Policy directorate advises Ministers on the contribution of our primary sector to New Zealand's economy, to:
- Improve primary sector productivity
- Increase sustainable resource use
- Support the transition to a circular and bioeconomy
- Assist the primary sectors to adapt to changes in climate, government regulations and community expectations.
- Delivering on primary sector Government priorities.
Our diverse work includes:
- New regulatory initiatives and amendments to primary sector legislation including for the Fishing, Forestry and production animal-based industries
- Contributing to cross-government initiatives such as the Emissions Reduction Plan, resource management reform, development of biodiversity standards for the marine environment
- Supporting the Māori-Crown relationship through strengthening our partnerships with Māori and iwi and providing for participation and protection in the land and marine environment
- Supporting quality decisions through clear advice on strategic and operational policy issues.

We work across government and in partnership with iwi and Māori land-owners, regions, sectors and communities to empower the primary sector and rural communities and improve kaitiakitanga. Our advice is informed by policy research, economic analysis, and system design with a strong focus on implementation.

Aquaculture policy
Come and join the aquaculture policy team supporting government decision-making in a high profile growth area which is rapidly increasing its impact on New Zealand's economy and is only set to get bigger….
We deliver a mix of strategic and regulatory policy to support to government's goal of $3 billion by 2035, guided by the Government's aquaculture strategy.
Our marine focus means we consider customary, recreational, and commercial uses of the marine environment alongside environmental outcomes. We work with iwi and agencies like the Ministry for the Environment and the Department of Conservation.
Fisheries Policy
The Fisheries Policy Team is responsible for leading the review and development of strategic policy that relates to New Zealand's fisheries and the ecosystems that support them.
The team engages with tangata whenua, industry, and other stakeholders to develop policy that delivers outcomes for New Zealand. Our work programme focuses on sustainability, benefits for all New Zealanders, decision-making, monitoring and enforcement, and future challenges for fisheries and wider oceans.
Forestry Policy
There is a lot of change happening around how forestry can contribute to New Zealand's economy, our environment and climate change and impacts on local communities.
You can help shape this through our team's work on domestic and international forestry system policy issues. These includes the emissions reduction plan, working with the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group, helping implement the Legal Harvest Assurance Bill, industry transformation and climate change.
We work closely with Te Uru Rākau/New Zealand Forest Service, other parts of MPI and government, with iwi and industry stakeholders.
Horticulture Sector Policy
The horticulture sector policy team supports Ministers and the sector to grow one of New Zealand's most exciting and diverse primary sectors.
We look after the regulatory systems that underpin New Zealand's horticulture and viticulture sectors, providing high-quality advice to Ministers about future regulatory settings.
We work closely with other government agencies, industry, research, and Māori to implement the Aotearoa Horticulture Action Plan, with its ambitious goal to grow the value of horticulture to $12bn by 2035.
