Salary range: General Salary Range C: $117,035 to $156,888 depending on skills and experience
Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
Are you a veterinarian with specialist knowledge and interested in building Pacific animal health capabilities?
The Enhanced Pacific Biosecurity Programme started at the end of 2021 with the objective of supporting the Pacific Islands to strengthen their biosecurity systems, capability, and capacity to manage and protect their countries from biosecurity threats such as trans bound animal diseases and exotic diseases.
This support will focus on activity delivery to six Pacific Island countries (Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Niue) working closely with Government officials in these countries.
Support will focus on disease investigation and surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, and biosecurity responses. The environment is highly relational and to work with Pacific Island countries you will need to have a high level of awareness of their cultural complexities.
Reporting to the Pacific Programme Manager, you will be working closely with the Pacific Programme team, as well as the wider MPI business to deliver a fit for purpose programme for our Pacific partners. The purpose of the role is to provide veterinarian regional support, project leadership, and delivery of regional training of para-veterinarians.
It is essential you are able to travel for this role, you will be required to travel to the Pacific frequently throughout the year.

You have a veterinary background and have provided mentorship and/or leadership. You may have worked in an environment where you've developed a programme and built capabilities. You love to work in an ambiguous environment with the ability to create a programme from scratch that effectively enhances veterinary capacity.
You foster trusting working relationships with international partners of the Pacific while showcasing MPI.
You will need to have:
- A mix of clinical, industry or Government, and International veterinary experience
- Expertise of country level biosecurity systems (pre-border, border, and post-border)
- Ability to work in complex environments thinking beyond the ordinary for solutions
- A high level of diplomacy and sensitivity towards other cultures and organisational values
- Experience in project management and development work
- Experience in analytical thinking, problem solving, and are a self-starter
You must have a current full New Zealand driver licence (not temporary, learner, or provisional) or equivalent full foreign drivers licence, and any endorsements required for the type of driving you'll be doing.
