Salary Range: GSR D, $98,955 - $132,427 depending on skills and experience.
(Salary midpoint is $115,691 per annum)
Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Policy Analyst to join the Strategic & Treaty Policy team in the Strategy Insights & Evidence directorate within MPI's Policy & Trade business unit.
The Strategic and Treaty Policy team supports MPI to deliver on cross-cutting, strategic policy issues, including Treaty of Waitangi policy. The team is responsible for engaging with other agencies on cross cutting, strategic policy issues, co-ordinating across MPI to develop Departmental positions on policy issues while also providing and building Treaty of Waitangi advice and capability.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Policy Analyst to lead the development of strategic policy positions across MPI and present these to Ministers, other agencies and other key stakeholders. You will work closely with teams across MPI, other Government agencies and beyond.
As part of this role, you will:
- Provide policy advice that clearly communicates complex issues to Ministers;
- Lead engagement internally at MPI, with other government agencies and beyond to ensure practical and effective advice;
- Develop innovative and practical policy options across various topics;
- Build and maintain effective relationships to monitor the progress of specific issues;
- Support the team and directorate growth by sharing knowledge and skills through mentoring and coaching.
Mōu - About You
Ideally, you are currently working as a Senior Policy Analyst or in a similar role, with demonstrated core policy experience.
You will be able to demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, a solution focussed approach, and a proven ability to establish and develop effective relationships. You will be comfortable connecting with various stakeholders including Ministers and other agencies and presenting information in a way that can be easily understood by various internal and external audiences.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- At least 2 years' experience as a Senior Policy Analyst or in a similar policy role;
- Previous experience and interest to build expertise in economic policy is desired, but not essential;
- Experience using a range of oral, written, and visual mediums to communicate effectively in diverse situations;
- Critical thinking and analytical skills to solve complex policy problems;
- Ability to provide clear, concise, well-reasoned, articulate and practical advice;
- Strong self-motivation, with a demonstrated curiosity and desire to learn more; including leading and coaching others to deliver high-quality work;
- A demonstrated ability to anticipate possible challenges and prepare for or mitigate them;
- Flexibility and comfort working with ambiguity;
- Ability to build and maintain a network of relationships with stakeholders across MPI, other Government agencies, and Industry.

This is a Wellington based role reporting to the Manager Strategic & Treaty Policy. The team are looking for someone with strong core policy skills who can hit the ground running.
The team also works closely with the wider Policy & Trade business unit, government agencies and industry so there is ample opportunity to build meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
