Adviser Governance
Role type: Fixed-term for 12 months, full-time
Location: Wellington City
Salary Range: General Salary Range F: $ 76,463 to $ 89,215 depending on skills and experience.
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
You will be part of the Governance Team, that works across the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to champion our governance framework and manages our Senior Leadership Team's (SLT) decision-making committees. Our team also monitors the operation and governance of a Crown Entity – the New Zealand Walking Access Commission.
Our Governance team is part of the Strategy, Governance, & Performance directorate which sits in the Public Affairs business unit. Our directorate's work helps ensure there is confidence in the operation and direction of MPI. This is a small but mighty directorate, offering a positive team culture with a good reputation for delivery and working in a collegial environment across the entire organisation.
We are looking for an advisor to support the Secretariat functions for our SLT's decision-making committees, as well as supporting our monitoring role for the New Zealand Walking Access Commission.
This will include:
- Supporting the preparation of agendas and meetings.
- Working with Governance team members and report authors to ensure timeline requirements are met.
- Ensuring committee meeting logistics and document management requirements are met.
- Leading and promoting good governance practices through both your committee support and MPI's wider governance networks.
You will have the opportunity to support and lead aspects of MPI's Crown entity monitoring and board appointment's role for the New Zealand Walking Access Commission, including preparing written advice for the responsible Minister.
About You - Mōu
You will be a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of public sector governance and a passion for supporting effective decision-making. With a background in policy, strategy, or governance, you bring experience working in or with government agencies and are confident advising senior leaders.
You thrive in a collaborative environment and are skilled at building relationships across diverse teams. Your communication is clear and compelling – whether you're writing reports, presenting to stakeholders, or providing advice to governance committees.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Strong report writing and analysis skills, preferably in the public service context.
- Experience working in the machinery of government.
- Experience designing, improving, and implementing systems and processes.
- Integrity, maturity, and excellent communication skills.
- The ability to understand strategic goals of the team.
- Knowledge of and experience in management reporting.
- Skilled in the preparation and organisation of reports, letters, and other documents.
- Experience in problem solving using sound judgement.
- The ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
- The capability to build good working relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders.
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or related experience.
- Experience in or other support functions for governance committees or senior executive teams would be an advantage.
