Policy Analyst, Trade Policy & Economics
Role type: Permanent, full-time
Location: Wellington City
Salary Range: General Salary Range F: $76,463 to $101,967 depending on skills and experience
(Maximum appointment for this position will be at the salary midpoint, $89,215 per annum)
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
We are seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Trade Policy & Economics team which sits within the Trade & International Relations directorate of Policy & Trade.
As a Policy Analyst, you will represent MPI and New Zealand on the international stage (both in person and online) and provide high quality analysis on complex issues.
This is an internationally focused role supporting our primary sectors, including opportunities to:
- contribute towards the strategic direction of trade policy.
- engage on economic issues which impact on New Zealand's trade and the international trading environment.
- support development of MPI's domestic policy by providing trade policy input; and
- represent New Zealand in plurilateral and multilateral international trade organisations and negotiations.
As part of this role, you will:
- Identify and report on trends and issues in the primary sector, including monitoring relevant developments in the international context
- Support reducing trade barriers including through bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral channels
- Develop evidence-based trade policy advice to support the delivery of Government action related to the primary sector
- Provide strategic insights into the future direction of trade policy for the primary sectors and monitor relevant developments in the international context.
This is a full-time, Wellington based role. Given the international context of this role, some domestic and offshore travel may be required, and you may be asked to work outside of standard work hours at times.
About You - Mōu
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, a solution focussed approach, and being comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Ideally you will have had some experience in the public sector and have completed relevant University studies in trade policy, international policy or economics or other related fields. Experience in applying trade and economic policy to problems and engaging with international counterparts would be an advantage.
Some experience with consultation and engagement with external stakeholders is an advantage.
You will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience using a range of oral, written, and visual mediums to communicate effectively in diverse situations
- Critical thinking and analytical skills to solve policy problems
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to work collaboratively across MPI, across government, and with external stakeholder groups
- Enthusiasm and strong team working skills.

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
You will work with our Wellington based team, reporting to the Manager Trade Policy & Economics, and work alongside a collaborative team.
The Trade Policy and Economics team at MPI supports New Zealand's primary industries by working hard to ensure excellent access for our primary products into as many international markets as possible.
This involves engaging in negotiations in bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral contexts and providing the technical expertise required to address trade issues relevant to the primary sectors, for example, understanding tariff quota administration systems, addressing non-tariff barriers to trade, and engaging on the agricultural trade policies of other countries. It also means providing trade policy advice to domestic policy teams and representing MPI across agencies on trade policy related matters.

- most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR
