About the Role – Kōrero mō te Tūranga

The Forestry System directorate at Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service are seeking two Policy Analysts to join the Sector Growth and Sector Strategy teams. These roles are central to shaping the future of New Zealand's forestry sector.

The directorate provides operational policy and economic development advice, acting as a key link between MPI's Policy & Trade units and the forestry and wood processing sectors. Our work spans sector development, market expansion, land-use planning in Tairāwhiti, and initiatives like the Maximising Forest Carbon Programme.

Sector Strategy takes a system-wide view of the forestry supply chain, identifying opportunities to drive sustainable growth and innovation.

Sector Growth focuses on improving firm performance, supporting regional development, and advancing the bioeconomy. It manages the Wood Processing Growth Fund and fosters public-private partnerships.

As a Policy Analyst, you will work alongside senior staff and colleagues across disciplines, engaging with Treaty Partners, stakeholders, and other agencies to deliver meaningful outcomes.

 You will:

• develop and implement policy to support sustainable land use, climate resilience, and economic development.
• contribute to regulatory best practice and inclusive, future-focused policy.
• engage with Treaty Partners and stakeholders on key issues.
• support initiatives that drive innovation and sector growth.
• collaborate across teams to deliver integrated solutions.

About You – Mōu

You bring analytical and critical thinking, stakeholder awareness, and a passion for regulatory excellence. You'll likely be working, or have worked, in government or environmental economics, and may be looking to diversify your career. You have a relevant qualification, and ideally an understanding of New Zealand's primary sector. You understand the impact of government interventions and can assess regulatory benefits and risks.

Using your excellent written communication you're confident understanding complexity, writing advice, supporting projects, building effective collaborative relationships with Māori and other stakeholders. You will apply Te Tiriti principles and Te Ao Māori in your work and bring a customer-focused mindset to problem solving.
