Job Title: Senior Commercial Analyst
Role type: Permanent, Full-time
Location: Wellington City
Salary Band: D $100,934 to $129,804 depending on skills and experience
About the Role – Kōrero mō te Tūranga
We're looking for a Senior Commercial Analyst to join our Finance team and support Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) strategic and operational decision-making. You'll be a key adviser to a diverse business unit, providing financial insights and commercial advice.
This role supports a commercially focused portfolio that's critical to New Zealand's wellbeing, with 70% of funding from external revenue you will need to showcase your commercial flair, a rare feature in the public sector. You will have the opportunity to collaborate within and across teams that support our internal and external customers.
You'll work closely with managers to ensure financial information is timely, accurate, and meaningful. The role connects finance with science, policy, and operations, translating complexity into clear, actionable advice in a fast-paced, commercially minded environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing and analysing budgets, forecasts, and financial reports
- Providing commercial advice on investment proposals and strategic initiatives
- Supporting cost recovery modelling and regulatory impact assessments
- Building financial capability across MPI business units
- Experience with managing complex relationships in a competitive setting
About You – Mōu
You're a Chartered Accountant (or equivalent) with experience in both centralised finance functions and commercial analysis with a desire to make a difference.
You're an autonomous commercially minded analyst who enjoys working with people and numbers to deliver meaningful and clear financial insights. You're confident understand pricing, cost drivers, and scenario modelling, and have exposure to contracts, business law, and economics.
You will bring:
- A minimum of five years experience in management accounting with commercial exposure
- Experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting
- Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills
- Understanding of government financial processes and reporting
- A tertiary qualification in accounting, finance, or a related field
