Senior Policy Analyst, Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Role Type: Permanent, full-time
Location: Wellington
Salary range & band: General Salary Range D: $100,934 to $118,005 depending on skills and experience
About the Role – Kōrero mō te Tūranga
We are looking for a strategically minded and technically skilled Senior Policy Analyst to join our Inventory & Benchmarking team within the Strategy, Insights and Evidence directorate of the Policy & Trade business unit. This role is central to strengthening the integrity and transparency of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions reporting, particularly in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector.
As a Senior Policy Analyst, you will:
- Lead strategic modelling and analysis of the LULUCF sector's contribution to New Zealand's emissions profile.
- Provide expert advice and thought leadership on forestry-related emissions and accounting frameworks.
- Manage research projects and improve emissions reporting methodologies.
- Collaborate across agencies and represent MPI in national and international forums.
- Mentor junior analysts and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
About You – Mōu
You'll bring a strong mix of technical expertise, policy experience, and analytical capability. You're comfortable working with complex data and communicating technical insights to a range of audiences.
We're especially interested in candidates who have:
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in policy, modelling, or analysis.
- Expertise in statistical modelling using tools such as R and Excel.
- Knowledge of the LULUCF sector, climate change policy, and emissions accounting.
- Experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence and lead.
About the Team – Mō tō mātou Rōpū
You'll be part of the Inventory & Benchmarking team within the Policy & Trade branch. Our team is responsible for:
- Developing projections and scenarios of future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land use
- Compiling the agriculture portion of New Zealand's GHG Inventory, and providing advice on the LULUCF portion of the Inventory
