Job Title: Adviser – Plant Exports
Role type: Full time preferred, fixed term through to November 2026
Location: Wellington
Salary band & range: F - $76,463 to $89,215 depending on skills and experience
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
This Adviser role sits within our Biosecurity Import & Export Standards Directorate and plant health system. You'll help shape export assurance programmes and technical requirements for forestry, seed, horticultural and plant products.
You'll apply plant protection expertise and risk management skills to support exporters and grow market access. Your stakeholder engagement and project management experience will be key.
We're looking for a collaborative problem solver who's confident sharing ideas, giving advice and making sound judgments.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Develop and review export assurance programmes
- Set technical requirements for plant product exports
- Provide advice to support market access growth
- Collaborate with exporters and industry stakeholders
- Write clear, fit-for-purpose technical documents
- Hold a relevant science based qualification
About You - Mōu
You'll bring a science based qualification, ideally in plant, forestry or biological sciences or experience in a regulatory setting. You'll be motivated by making a difference, using applied science to support sustainable exports and benefit Aotearoa.
You'll likely be working, or have worked, in government, industry or a science led organisation. You'll enjoy solving problems, sharing ideas and collaborating with others to support New Zealand's export growth.

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
You'll be part of the Plant Exports group within Biosecurity Import & Export Standards. We are a collaborative team of 12 based mostly in Wellington. We work together to reduce biosecurity risk and support export assurance for New Zealand's plant products.
Our mahi helps exporters meet overseas requirements and ensures produce is safe before it leaves Aotearoa. We're known for facilitating exports for New Zealand's plant products and navigating change with a positive mindset. The team culture is open, supportive and great at wrapping around each other when challenges arise.
About MPI - Mō te Manatū Ahu Matua
Our role includes seizing export opportunities for our food and fibre sector, improving sector productivity, ensuring the food we produce is safe, increasing sustainable resource use, and protecting New Zealand from biological risk.
