Job Description
Job title: Geospatial Analyst
Role type: Permanent, full-time
Location: Wellington City
Salary band & range: BTIS F $85,928 to $100,351 depending on skills and experience
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
You're an experienced Geospatial Analyst who enjoys working on the technology side of GIS. You bring practical expertise in managing enterprise geospatial platforms and understand how high- quality systems, integrations, and data assets enable people across an organisation to do their best work. You're confident working with the ESRI suite and can hit the ground running in a hands-on technical role.
You enjoy collaborating with business units, understanding their operational needs, and turning these into effective GIS applications, data capture tools, and real time mapping solutions. You take pride in building tools that support field operations and help teams across MPI make fast, informed decisions. You're not focused on analysis or cartography. Instead, you're passionate about designing and improving geospatial technology that others rely on.
You're curious, proactive, and committed to continuous learning. You like solving problems, exploring new geospatial capabilities, and staying ahead of platform developments. You're someone who doesn't give up at the first hurdle, thrives on variety, and is motivated to grow your career while contributing to a supportive and skilled team.
You'll bring:
- At least three years direct GIS experience using the ESRI suite, including enterprise systems and ArcGIS Online
- Experience administering geospatial platforms and managing spatial data
- Ability to build and support GIS apps, tools, dashboards, and field capture solutions
- Understanding of platform integrations and how geospatial systems connect with other technologies
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn, experiment, and improve tools continuously
- Excellent communication skills and confidence working with multiple business units
- FME experience (highly desirable)
About You - Mōu
You understand geospatial concepts and have practical experience using GIS tools, ideally within the ESRI ArcGIS suite. You bring applied technical experience rather than theoretical knowledge, and you're comfortable working in an environment where requirements shift and evolve. You're curious, adaptable, and motivated by problem solving with the ability to learn quickly and navigate variety in your work.
You enjoy working with customers and stakeholders to deliver geospatial solutions that genuinely meet their needs. You've used GIS tools enough to be confident in your foundational skills, and you're ready to grow further within a supportive team culture that offers plenty of variety and on the job learning. This role won't teach geospatial basics, so you'll already bring experience working with GIS tools and a solid understanding of geospatial concepts.
You'll have:
- Experience delivering geospatial products and solutions
- Understanding of the product life cycle and how it applies to geospatial tools
- Practical experience with ArcGIS (Desktop, Enterprise, and Online)
- Familiarity with FME (Flow and Form) software
- Ability to learn quickly and solve problems creatively
- Strong customer focus and confidence engaging with stakeholders
You do not need to meet all the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.
About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
Our Geospatial team enables MPI to source, manage, and use geospatial data effectively. We develop the standards, frameworks, and structures that underpin geospatial data management across the organisation. We work closely with business units to provide GIS applications, tools, and guidance, supporting a wide range of operational and strategic needs.
We're a collaborative team that's passionate about building fit for purpose geospatial solutions. Our work helps MPI collect, visualise, and manage geospatial data in ways that support decision making and operational delivery. We prioritise practical, user centred solutions that make a real difference to how information is captured, understood, and used across MPI.
You'll join a closeknit team of four (two Senior Geospatial Analysts and two Geospatial Analysts) and become our fifth member. We're currently undertaking a major platform modernisation project, which brings both variety and challenge to our work. The team is supportive, engaged, and generous with knowledge sharing, whether through regular collaboration sessions, mentoring, or simply catching up over lunch. We value teamwork, stretch goals, and creating a positive environment where everyone can grow.
