Communication Centre Officer x 2
Role type: Casual
Location: Wellington Region (this position is currently based in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt, while building maintenance work is ongoing at the ordinary site in Porirua)
Salary band & range: F $36.76 an hour – $42.89 an hour depending on skills and experience
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
You will support MPI's operational activities by monitoring the safety of field staff and providing real-time information to help them enforce legislation across New Zealand. You will also plan and execute responses to emergencies and requests for assistance, analyse digital monitoring equipment issues, and support wider operations with reporting and coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor safety of MPI field staff and provide real-time operational information.
- Plan and execute responses to emergencies and assistance requests.
- Record and analyse digital monitoring equipment malfunctions and provide recommendations.
- Advise public on commercial, recreational, and customary fishing rules.
- Support wider operations through information delivery and risk reporting.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
- Initial 6 weeks full time training.
About You - Mōu
You will bring strong communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a collaborative mindset. Your background will ideally include experience in operations rooms, contact centres, or customer service, with sound computer skills and an empathetic approach.
You will have:
- Ability to work in a busy environment and remain calm under pressure.
- A team-focused approach with strong communication skills.
- PC skills including accurate typing at 40+ words per minute.
- Radio communications or operations room experience (desirable).
About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
The National Communications Centre sits within Biosecurity New Zealand's Intelligence & Response directorate and operates as a highly collaborative, fast-paced team that provides 24/7 situational awareness and emergency support to MPI's frontline staff. The team works closely with the National Operations Centre, wider MPI business groups, and external partners such as Police and the commercial fishing sector to ensure accurate, timely information flows during critical events. NCC Officers support one another by sharing insights, coordinating responses, and maintaining a calm, professional environment even when managing multiple complex incidents at once.

Low level Security Clearance
- most preferably a New Zealand citizen or resident, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR
- has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
