Salary band & range: General Salary Range D $100,934 to $118,005 depending on skills and experience
About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
The Export Systems team is seeking a Senior Adviser to provide technical expertise into the development and implementation of initiatives across the live animal export work programme. This position is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful animal welfare outcomes while working on complex issues within a dynamic regulatory environment.
The role will be providing technical advice and support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of processes and requirements that underpin New Zealand's live animal exports systems. In this role you will need to work collaboratively across Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and engage effectively with exporters and associated organisations. Animal export issues can be complex; you will need to exercise good judgement and have practical problem-solving skills when working within this regulatory environment.

You are an experienced and collaborative professional who enjoys working on complex issues and delivering practical outcomes. You can confidently analyse information, provide sound advice, and build effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. Motivated by contributing to positive animal welfare outcomes, you are comfortable working across scientific, operational, regulatory, trade and stakeholder perspectives. You recognise that complex issues do not always have straightforward solutions and are able to apply sound judgement to balance competing considerations in a thoughtful and pragmatic way. You bring a solutions-focused mindset, adaptability and the ability to navigate a dynamic and evolving regulatory environment.
To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and attributes:
- Suitable qualification in a relevant field, including veterinary science
- Experience in an animal or animal welfare related field
- Broad knowledge of the New Zealand regulatory environment, Animal Products Act and Animal Welfare Act 1999
- Experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of internal and external stakeholders
- Well-developed research and analytical skills
- Well-developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Self-motivated with good organisational skills, able to set priorities and meet deadlines
About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
The Exports Systems team sits in the Animal Health & Welfare Directorate of the Agriculture and Investment Services Branch of the Ministry for Primary Industries. The team is responsible for developing and reviewing animal welfare standards and guidelines, ensuring that the work programme is implementing continuous improvements in the animal welfare system.
The team also manage approvals of Animal Welfare Export Certificates for livestock consignments and work across MPI teams, including liaising with the full range of export stakeholders.
